FAQ'S
Where do you leave from?
My boat is docked at the World Wide Sportsman Bayside Marina, Mile Marker 81.5 in Islamorada. |
What should I bring?
I supply all tackle, licenses, bait and ice. You should bring polarized sunglasses ( an absolute must for sight fishing), sunscreen, camera, food, drinks and appropriate clothing, including deck shoes or white soled sneakers. For the summer months long sleeved fishing shirts and pants will keep the sun off and provide some protection from biting insects. For the winter months a warm jacket is recommended. |
Can I bring my own fishing rod?
I supply rods and reels from Sage, G. Loomis, St. Croix, Tibor, Billy Pate, Shimano and Daiwa. Please let me know if you are thinking about bringing your own gear. Some tackle may be inappropriate. |
I am a novice freshwater fly angler. How different is fly fishing in the salt?
A lot of fly anglers make their first forays in the salt here in the Florida Keys. You certainly won't find a more beautiful classroom. In my experience I've found that one of the biggest stumbling blocks for fly anglers is their set of expectations. If you're new to the sport or the salt and have hopes of catching a bonefish on fly in a single afternoon, chances are you're probably going to go home fishless. Some people are okay with this and go out with the full understanding that they are embarking on a supreme angling challenge and simply want to experience it, fish or no fish. The truth is, if you're honest about your abilities and are open-minded, there are plenty of other angling opportunities that will put a bend in your rod and a smile on your face all day long. For instance, a day of fly fishing for trout, jacks, ladyfish or spanish mackerel allows anglers to work on their casting and catch fish at the same time. It's fun, relaxed fishing and good preparation for some of the other flats species that demand good casting. |
| I've never sight fished before. Is there anything I can do beforehand to prepare? Whether throwing a live shrimp to a bonefish with a spinning rod or chucking a fly at tarpon, casting accuracy is key when sight fishing. Having the ability to put a cast where you want it is a big part of angling success on the flats. For fly anglers, casts not only have to be made accurately but quickly as well. Practicing your casting whether with a spinning rod or fly rod before a trip will pay huge dividends in the end. |
When is the best time of year to fish?
Whenever you get the chance! It's true that there are parts of the year when certain species are more abundant but the weather is the determining factor. For example the winter months are not considered prime time for bonefish but a get a good spell of weather and the fishing can be excellent. |
